At the Watering Hole

 Hey Guys

It's been a whole week, I must apologize for my absence, but varsity has finally hit me for a six and deadline week lurks just around the corner. Considering I didn't post the whole of  this week , I wasn't able to chat to you guys  about last week Sunday, where my family and I manned our annual watering point for the John Korasie race in Simon's Town . We were down three team members this year and the pressure was on.

As is tradition every year, we had a 4 am wake-up call and clear skies had the early morning temperatures in the single digits. It was cold, it was dark and my UCT hoodie could only do so much damage in the heat department.  But Man, was the view over the navy dockyard amazing. Against the backdrop of the morning sky and the pitch black silky ocean, the naval base shone like marvelous beacon. Believe it or not, it got even better, with the skies opening to a stream of gold light as sunrise greeted us with some much needed warmth.  Breathtaking to say the least.

The first runners hit our watering point just on 7 am, where our handouts of coke and water were grabbed by runners who had just come to the disappointing realization that they had only reached the 6 km mark. Of course we obliged by screaming at the top of our lungs to keep the poor guys and girls going. As a seasonal runner myself, I know how, a little, encouragement from onlookers can go a long way. By 8.30 the runners were long gone and we had managed to make a speedy clean up.

There was only one thing left to do and that was to have breakfast.  Our bacon and egg rolls seemed to be the only thing that got the team up at 4 am every year to help out. The skottel was setup within minutes and the bacon and eggs were quickly sizzling away. Our breakfast permeated through the morning air with nosefuls of deliciousness.

While the rest of the team finished up with breakfast, my cousin, her boyfriend and I, took a walk up to Simon's Towns Scala Battery or Upper North Battery.  It had a grungy un-kept, yet totally hipster quality to it. It was definitely a spot I could vision some really exclusive magazine doing a photo shoot.  The battery was built in 1902 with a 9.2 inch gun. The view from the Gun looked over the whole Simon's Town and False Bay; it definitely makes sense as to why the gun is situated where it is. My recommendation today is to take a drive up to Simon's Town for some breathtaking views or to plunge into some real history.  Until I blog again.

An Amazeballing Womens Day

Hey Guys

I know there's a whole lot of historical value to the whole women's day thing but personally I'm just glad I got a Friday off, woohoo! Extra-long weekend, thanks to all those freedom fighting women. Considering my absolute and utter gratitude for a day off, I made the most of it.

Oh Yes, It's Ladies night

How did everyone spend their long weekend?

In true Boonzaier fashion, the young ladies of my family decided to kick off their long weekend with a pre-public holiday pamper party. The dress code of choice was nothing other than everyone’s favourite pair of pyjamas and of course there were lots of drinks and snacks going around all night. Unfortunately my pancreas problems kept me from taking part in the drinking activities but none the less my sober evening was absolutely amaze balls.

Like most girls nights in, there were lots of laughs, secrets and let’s not forget those awful, yet hilarious makeovers we all had to endure. The highlight of the evening, hands down, has got to be the introduction of the spice girls to the party . They hit the sound system on full blast. Seven girls dancing in sync and singing at the top of their lungs to raunchy, yet totally child friendly lyrics were priceless!
Most of us, don't remember exactly how we got to bed that night but it’s safe to say that six out of the seven girls woke up with a mother of a hangover on Friday morning. It was well worth it, well so I heard. While some of the girls tried to sleep off their hangovers, I got my nails done while indulging in red velvet cupcakes and hot coffee for breakfast, SCORE! I hardly ever have my nails painted, as they chip within minutes but Anne was a superstar and painted them so well that they lasted the whole weekend.
My recommendation for this post would be to take time out to just hang with the girls. You get to let some steam off and act like a total idiot, guilt free .Hope everyone's women's day started off as well as mine, until I blog again.

Muizenberg Beach

Last weekend we were blessed with such amazing weather. It was absolutely glorious, after weeks of cold rainy days; I couldn't bear to waste even the slightest appearance of sun knowing that the rain wasn't going to stay at bay for too long. Along with sister and our two yorkies in hand, we went down to Muizenberg Beach to soak up some sun and to get our feet wet. Just to make it clear, it definitely isn't warm enough to pull out your two piece just yet, a cardigan is definitely a must as there is still a slight chill in the air.
In winter Muizenberg has no time limitations on when to walk your dogs. The only restriction to walking your dogs on the beach is that they must be on a leash. A rule that it seems no dog owner, on the beach, seemed to follow, but who could blame them there was no visible sign of a police officer or even a life guard on duty.  A warning though , in summer law enforcement can be very serious about time restrictions and have been know to hand out fines if a dog is caught on the beach between peak  usage hours. Besides for having to watch out for overly friendly dogs trying to take a sniff of Tia or the landmines they left behind, there were no real complaints. The beach was clean, the sun was shining and it could possibly have been the most relaxing day I had in awhile. If it was a little warmer, a walk down to surfers corner for a soft server would have been ideal.

I highly recommend taking a long stroll on Muizenberg beach, with or without your dog. It will definitely take the stress of the week off your shoulders and give you a clear and relaxed conscience for the week ahead. Until I blog again.

The Epiphany

Hey Guys

Welcome to my blog, where I take an exciting and cultural exploration and journey through my native home of 22 years, Cape Town.  I’m a fun, lively and extremely short individual, currently doing my postgraduate studies in marketing at the University of Cape Town. I have an undergrad in film and media studies and yes, this blog was partially established as part of an e-marketing assignment, but what the hell!  It gave me excuse to use both my background in media and my new knowledge of marketing, under one platform.
